Dolly Rebecca Parton
Dolly Rebecca Parton was conceived in
Pittman Center on January 19 1946. She was raised in Sevierville to Avie Lee
Parton (a housewife) and Robert Lee Parton (a tobacco farmer). When she was 12
she was already appearing on Knoxville TV. At 13 she was already recording for
a small label and performing on the Grand Ole Opry. She graduated high school
in 1964 before moving to Nashville to begin her country singing journey. She
became a fan of Carl Dean, who ran an asphalt-paving firm. They got married on May
30 June, 1966, and they are still together. Porter Wagoner hired her in 1967 to
sing on his show, The Porter Wagoner Show (1961). The show aired for seven
years, her duets made waves and she was part of Porter Wagoner's band at the
Grand Ole Opry. She also sold records and toured. Her hit "Joshua"
was a chart-topper. number one in 1970, was her biggest single. She made the
decision to go on her own and remained with the group, even though she recorded
duets with him. The singer had left and began her solo career in 1974. Dolly
was an extremely well-known singer/songwriter. Dolly was awarded numerous
Country Music Association awards (1968-70, 1971-1972, 1975-1976 and 1976). This
petite (5'0") beauty was a natural at television at the time, and by the
middle of the 1970s she was often appearing on TV specials and talk shows prior
to launching her own, Dolly (1976). In 1977, Dolly got her first Grammy award:
Best Female Country Vocal Performance for her hit song "Here You Go
Again." Dolly's movie debut was in 9 to 5 (1980) in which she was awarded
an Oscar nomination for writing the title tune, and also Grammy Awards 2 and 3:
Best Country Song, and Best Female Country Vocal Performance for the song
"Nine to Five." The movie gained her more recognition for her role in
The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1982) as well as in Rhinestone (1984) with
the track "Tennessee Homesick Blues". Dolly Parton Enterprises is her
media empire, worth $100 million. In 1986, she established Dollywood the
Tennessee theme park located in Pigeon Forge. This was to honor her Smoky
Mountain upbringing. In the 1987 TV series Dolly she was the lead herself. She
also won a Grammy in 1988 for Best Country Performance Duo/Group with Vocals in
the category of "Trio".
